CHARCOAL & INK PENCIL ON PAPER

Occasionally I like to put away the paint and get my brushes (and hands) dirty. There’s something sensuous in how charcoal and graphite meet the paper, and how the ink pencil magically becomes fluid when water joins it. Similar to my process with paint, I allow the materials and the surface to interact and guide my exploration. Sometimes I use painter’s tape to rough up the paper’s surface, producing interesting effects. Other times I simply enjoy the boldness of a clean line carving into a white space.
