OIL ON CANVAS & MIXED MEDIA

My process is organic and improvisational; I rarely work from a sketch or preconceived image, and (usually) enjoy the surprises I encounter along the way.  I work directly into the painting and early on from different orientations, until one or more emerges as working particularly well.  Often, my satisfaction with a favorite finished piece is short-lived.  And so I keep painting, pursuing a sense of wholeness, of arriving at a final destination that eludes me, like the heat shimmer on a summer highway keeping its perfect distance. There’s a scene early on in the movie The Matrix, when Trinity and Neo first meet. “It’s the question that drives us”, she whispers to him. I believe we each have our own question that is also a fragment of a universal question. I paint as a means of visually exploring my connection to The Mystery, and making my discoveries visible to others.
