There’s something sensuous in how charcoal and graphite meet the paper, and how an ink pencil magically becomes fluid when water joins it. Similar to my process with paint, I allow the materials and the surface to interact and guide my exploration. Sometimes I use tools to rough up the paper’s surface, producing interesting effects. Other times I simply enjoy the boldness of a clean line carving into a white space. Also, I was happy to discover a paper that is tough enough to withstand the abuse of oil and cold wax plus other assorted materials that help create interest and texture.
